Mudventions are my unique, inventive creations in mud. They are my own organic blends of aquatic and botanical growths that fascinate and inspire me, reflections of my deep passion for nature and all its beautiful forms and abundant textural diversity. I am especially fond of those most unusual mysterious organisms found thriving in their own little microcosmic eco-niches, sometimes never to be seen by the naked eye. From the simple seed pods, wild mushrooms and sensual pitcher plants found deep in the forest, to the delicate coral, slimy sea slugs and undulating jellyfish found down in the sea, my passion has no boundaries much like the earthy material I create with.
The very nature of clay being of the earth provides me with ample inspiration to free its inner spirit and create unusual forms that display a sort of earthiness mixed with sea overtones. Being able to take a hunk of raw, squishy earth and transform it into just about anything one can imagine is beyond liberating to one who has an army of creative ideas running around doing somersaults and back flips in their head. Adding to that fun is the primordial magic of the ceramic process which allows me to connect with my inner pyromaniac magician to dabble in alchemy and cast creative spells. There is a lifetime of new techniques to try which fills me with great excitement and anticipation at what lies ahead in my muddy path. The greatest challenge with this wonderful freedom of manipulation, expression and experimentation is to steadily balance my little army of ideas with the practicality of executing them. Clay as a creative medium leaves no room for boredom, and always has an open door to experimentation.
The success of my mud-squishing endeavors lies in my aim to provoke an inspirational awareness filled with enlightened curiosity for those who encounter my rare undersea garden of earthly treasures. I enjoy creating interesting and captivating forms that stimulate many of our senses. Their function may be solely for display or simply to contain, and sometimes they make sound, provide light or allow water to ebb and flow over them. Thereby producing a distinct species of work that not only is pleasing to the eye and intriguing to the mind, but also uplifting to the spirit as well. Creations born OF the earth, WITH the earth and ON the earth... allowing the beauty of nature to be experienced and appreciated in all our waking moments wherever we may be in time and space.
